Eid prayers in a park expected to have attracted thousands of Muslims have been called off for the second year running because of weather conditions.

Green Lane mosque in Birmingham said it had made the "difficult decision" to not hold gatherings marking the end of Ramadan at Small Heath Park and Edgbaston Cricket Ground.

Waterlogged grass and more rain being forecast were given as the reasons.

Eid al-Fitr prayers will take place at the mosque in Small Heath on Wednesday. In April last year, hundreds of families went there as the park and stadium events were not held.

There will be five separate congregational prayers at the mosque to "accommodate the expected large number of attendees".

Eid prayers will start 06:30 BST and on the half hour until the prayers at 10:30 BST.

'United in solidarity'

Mosque chair of trustees Mohammed Saeed said as "we come together to celebrate Eid this year, our hearts are weighed down by the tragic crisis unfolding in Gaza".

He added: "Yet, in the face of such immense suffering, our community has united in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

"I am immensely proud to announce that, through the incredible generosity of our community, we have raised nearly £900,000 this Ramadan alone to support humanitarian causes."
