A 13-floor "hotel for music lovers" has been given planning permission to be built in Glasgow.

The hotel will sit near the banks of the River Clyde alongside the SWG3 arts and concert venue in the city's Finnieston area.

Glasgow city councillors approved the plans for the 142-bedroom block, which will have a rooftop bar and restaurant with views across the city.

Designed by architects Stallan-Brand, the council planning committee said it was an “exciting looking building” that could become an icon for the city.

SWG3 founders Andrew Fleming-Brown and Andrew Mickel, alongside hotelier Bruce Robertson are behind the hotel project.

The project promises to create 100 jobs and will have two restaurants, two bars, co-working spaces, a gym and rooftop terrace.

Scottish artists Douglas Gordon and Jim Lambie will advise on "fashion, art and music" for the hotel, with a sculpture created by Mr Lambie.

There is no car parking planned for the hotel, only spaces for 26 bikes.

The plans propose a cycle route next to the building as part of the council's Connecting Yorkhill and Kelvingrove, external project.

Part of the site is planned for events, urban markets and outdoor cinema screenings.

Glasgow Cllr Ken Andrews, who chaired the planning committee, said the hotel would "become a bit of an icon of that part of the city".

The hotel is part of the Glasgow Riverside Innovation District (Grid) – aimed at promoting industry and innovation at the River Clyde.

Hotelier Bruce Robertson said: “Our plan is to resolve a space which responds to its unique location, whilst resonating with the local community and delivering a range of benefits."

Paul Stallan, Creative Director at Stallan-Brand, added: “As a hotel for music lovers, the SWG3 team are excited to expand their programme with a new leisure offer that will ensure they remain more visible, vital and circular.”
