Almost 200 counterfeit England football tops with an estimated value of £17,000 have been seized in a police raid.

Officers, acting on a tip-off, visited an address in Meadow Well, North Shields, where they recovered the stash along with 27,000 illegal cigarettes valued at about £19,600.

Police and North Tyneside Trading Standard officers believe the goods were being sold from the property.

An investigation into the haul was ongoing, police said.

Sgt James Younas, of the Northumbria force, said: "We’re dogged in our approach to removing these illicit items from circulation.

"Our communities deserve better than that, and this is just one of many hauls of items we’ve seized in the last few months.”
