Bridge temporarily closes for inspection works

A bridge has been closed for five days to enable engineers to inspect it.
The 185-year-old Branston Bridge in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, will be shut from Monday until Friday.
Traffic going over the railway bridge on the B5018 Main Street has been subject to weight and width restrictions since August due to structural issues, the council said.
Engineers would be digging investigatory holes to locate utilities and inspect ground conditions before planning how they can strengthen the bridge. This, it is hoped, could allow heavier vehicles to use the bridge again.
“We understand the inconvenience the closure will cause, but our priority is to ensure there is a safe structure in place so larger vehicles can eventually cross the bridge again," cabinet member for strategic highways Mark Deaville said:
He said the council would be discussing with the Department for Transport about the funding required from government for any proposed works that may come forward.
The council said options being considered included a temporary metal structure or a concrete strengthening slab.
There will be signed diversions in place while the bridge is closed.
