Work has started on the indoor and outdoor sports and leisure facilities at Truro's Boscawen Park.

The £5.2m Sports Hub project was led by the city council and funded by Truro Town Deal and includes a new multi-use building constructed at the park, which will also include changing rooms, space for conferences, community and family events.

Mayor Chris Wells said: "It is realising a dream that the city council has long held."

He said: "It's has always been a very popular place for families to gather, particularly at weekends. This is providing extra facilities at weekends that will encourage more people to use it. "

He hopes community groups and young people will be keen to use the facilities.

Town clerk David Rodda said the park gets "quite wet" in the winter and the playing surfaces "aren't ideal" and will be drained and reseeded so people can play football more regularly year-round.

The pitch drainage work should be completed within seven weeks and alternative sites have been found for people playing competitive sports until April next year as the pitch cannot be used for some time after reseeding.

Mr Rodda said a fence has been put up round the pitch and removal was "weather dependent".

"If we get a good autumn season, a good growing season, we would hope to be able to take the fences down by the end of the year.

"If not it may have to go into the new year."
