Plans for the digital billboard were rejected by Bradford Council earlier this summer

A planning inspector has been urged to overturn a council's refusal to allow a large digital advertising sign overlooking a West Yorkshire motorway.

An application for a 21ft x 8ft (6.5m x 2.5m) billboard to be fitted onto the side of a building by the M606 in Bradford was rejected by the district council earlier this summer.

Planning officers said it was "wholly inappropriate" to fit an advertisement that was likely to "cause a distraction" for drivers.

The applicant, Surjit Singh, has lodged an appeal against that decision.

Under the proposal, the sign would have been attached to a commercial property on Commondale Way, which runs parallel with the M606, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

In his appeal, Mr Singh said: "I believe there has been no concerns over incidents occurred due to these boards.

"The examples I have attached are much larger boards in size compared to the one which we are proposing and they are also located on motorways which I believe have a higher volume of traffic compared to the M606."

A decision on the appeal will be made at a later date.
