A police officer has been charged with child sexual offences.

PC Mark Ling, 38, of Essex Police has been charged with eight counts of sexual communications with a child, two counts of cyber flashing, and one count of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

The charges relate to alleged online interactions between an adult and girls under the age of 16.

Mr Ling, who was arrested in September, was due to appear at Ipswich Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Ch Supt Scott Egerton said: "Tackling violence against women and girls is an absolute priority for Essex Police and we take all allegations very seriously.

He added: "These are serious allegations, and it is absolutely right that we investigate them and support those involved."

Essex Police has urged anyone who might have information that could help with inquiries, to get in touch.

The officer is currently suspended, and the matter has been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct.
