Crews tackle large fire at business yard

Eight fire engines have been dispatched to deal with the fire

Firefighters are battling a blaze at a yard near a protected nature reserve.

Cleveland Fire Brigade was called to Cowpen Bewley Road, in Haverton Hill, Stockton, shortly after 12:00 BST.

Eight fire engines are at the premises, near RSPB Saltholme, and multiple road closures are in place.

The fire service has advised people to avoid the area and to keep their windows and doors closed due to the smoke.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson confirmed emergency services were dealing with a "large fire at a business yard".

"Several fire appliances have been tackling the blaze since 12:15 and several roads have been closed due to thick smoke in the air."
