Work planned for footbridge after tractor crash

A cracked slab underneath the bridge is among the issues to be addressed

A Shropshire footbridge has sustained "significant damage" after a tractor crashed into it earlier this month, National Highways has said.
Emergency measures including a temporary footpath and traffic lights have been installed to maintain one lane of traffic across the A49 Onibury bridge.
The road remained structurally safe after the incident on 1 September, National Highway added.
Plans are being developed to repair the damage, which will include replacing the bridge parapets and edge beams.
National Highways said the temporary traffic system would remain in place while repair plans were drawn up.

"The close proximity of the level crossing also requires stricter traffic management to keep road users and pedestrians safe throughout," said Joseph Walmsley, route manager at National Highways.
"Detailed inspections of the bridge have highlighted that further work needs to be done to the underneath of the bridge to make it safe for all users.
"There are multiple complexities to this type of repair and the complex design and age of the bridge means these types of unexpected repairs can take time."
