A road has been closed due to a "large fire" at a derelict restaurant in Derby.

Derbyshire Police said it had received reports of the blaze in Osmaston Road at about 19:00 BST on Sunday.

Pictures show the fire is in the former La Gondola restaurant, which has been empty since 2009.

The road was closed between the junctions of Reginald Street and Douglas Street, police said.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service urged those living nearby to keep their windows and doors closed while the incident was dealt with.

The restaurant had been a popular spot in the 1970s and 80s and even appeared on celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares.

Plans to demolish the restaurant and build two blocks of flats in its place were approved in February.
