The government has said it is looking for individuals, businesses, and community groups to operate the "historic and iconic" coastal lido in St Helier.

The minister for infrastructure said an expression of interest document had been published for the Havre des Pas seawater pool and associated concession facility.

It said the "historic and iconic coastal destination" provided a "unique opportunity" to contribute to community life on the island and visitor economy.

Minister for infrastructure, Constable Andy Jehan, said the lido was a "vital public asset" and its current tenant was due to vacate the premises in October.

"We want to hear from individuals, businesses, and community groups who would be interested in potentially operating the lido for the benefit of the community," he said.

“It is an opportunity to have a look to see what we can achieve at the lido.

"We are willing to listen to expressions of interest for the operation of the whole site, or for part of the lido."

Jehan said the government was "open" to two models. He said one was for someone to take over the whole premises and maintain it, as well as run a business at the site, which could be a cafe or water sports firm.

He said the second option was for someone to run the facility while the government continued to manage it. The deadline for applications is 31 December.

'Achieve our vision'

“It gives people time to draw up their business plans and produce a real good case to why they should be given the running of the lido," Jehan said.

He added it was an important step towards ensuring the year-round inclusive community use of the lido, and it would assist the department in identifying potential future uses.

The minister added: "We are open to all ideas and options, provided that they are built around the interests of the island community, and especially islanders living in St Helier.

"We are confident in creating an exciting future for Havre des Pas and look forward to working in partnership with interested parties to achieve our vision."

He added that the government said in June that it would spend about £350,000 and that figure had now increased to £500,000.

"We have a lot of work to do there, and the vacant position will allow us to do that," he said.

He added a formal tender process would follow at the conclusion of the expression of interest process.
