Two people have been arrested after opposing demonstrators gathered in Chatham on Wednesday.

About 50 counter-protesters were met by 150 anti-immigration protesters and the two groups were separated by Kent Police officers in Maidstone Road.

Scenes boiled over at one point - union jacks were waved and two people were arrested after scuffles broke out with the police.

Here is a selection of news images taken on Wednesday.

Kent Police, which had originally said five people were arrested following the protests, later confirmed two people were arrested on suspicion of public order offences.

One was alleged to have shouted racial abuse and another made homophobic comments to a police officer.

Separately, a man was arrested for common assault and causing criminal damage to a mobile phone at a small anti-immigration gathering in Saxon Street, Dover.
