Phone signal goes live on 25% of underground Tube

TfL aims to cover the entire network by 2025

Around 25% of London's underground Tube lines now have phone signal, as the project continues for full coverage across the whole network.

All of the Elizabeth line stations now have coverage with Paddington, Whitechapel, Canary Wharf and Woolwich completing it.

Some Victoria and Piccadilly line stations are now covered with more to follow in central London later this month.

By the end of the summer, large sections of the the West End and southern end of the Northern line will be connected, Transport for London (TfL) said.

The first bits of the Piccadilly line at Covent Garden and the Victoria line between Warren Street and Euston are also the latest stations to go live.

Work to deliver coverage signal on the track of the Elizabeth line continues, with the first sections between Bond Street and Liverpool Street expected to get coverage within the coming month and the whole line completed later this year.

The track between Piccadilly Circus and Hyde Park Corner on the Piccadilly line will also go live in the coming weeks.

Stockwell to Morden will go live on the Northern line soon and work is set to start soon on the Bakerloo line.

Currently, around 31 out of 121 Tube stations and tunnels that are underground have mobile coverage. When combined with Tube stations which are above ground, this will be 80% of stations across the network.

Around 500 TfL staff work overnight installing more than 2,000 kilometres (1,242 miles) of cabling and thousands of radios into stations and tunnels, with work beginning in 2022.

Three UK, EE, Vodafone, and Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) are the networks taking part in the rollout.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has committed to completing work across all of the London Underground, Docklands Light Railway (DLR), London Overground and the Elizabeth line by the end of 2025.
