Parents and guardians are being encouraged to check their children are up to date with their measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination schedule after outbreaks of measles in the UK.

There have been no recorded cases of measles in Jersey since 2019, the States said.

The main symptoms of measles are a fever and a rash, but the virus can cause serious illness, including meningitis.

The MMR vaccine is given in two doses, the first before age two and the second before age five.

The States said vaccination rates for 2023 in Jersey were expected to reach the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) target of 95%.

Deputy director of public health, Grace Norman, said: “The UK has seen a rise in measles cases which is due to low vaccination uptake.

"Our vaccination rates remain high and level with the WHO’s target, however, it is vital that all children are fully protected.

"The MMR vaccine is the best defence against serious infection, so I urge all parents to make sure their children are as protected as possible.

"If your child has not yet had the MMR vaccine or hasn’t had both doses, you should call your GP and book an appointment as soon as possible.”

Parents and guardians can check their child's vaccination status in their red book, or by contacting the specialist immunisations nurse.
