Residents can have their say on the neighbourhood plans for Werrington until 5 September

Residents have been invited to have their say on plans for future developments in their area.

The Werrington Neighbourhood Plan, prepared by the Werrington Area Forum, Peterborough, aims to ensure the area does not lose its "essential character".

Vince Moon, chair of the forum, hoped the plan would "provide a basis for co-operation with others so the common interest of all residents are protected."

Residents can comment on the plans for the Peterborough suburb until 5 September.

Werrington Neighbourhood Area Forum has submitted its draft Neighbourhood Plan to Peterborough City Council.

It sets out objectives for the future of the Werrington Neighbourhood Area and contains planning policies to guide the development and use of land.

Councillor Dennis Jones, leader of the council, said: "There is an opportunity for people that live or have an interest in Werrington Parish to have a greater say over developments there in the future.

"As with any consultation, we value as much feedback as possible, so encourage interested parties to have their say."

What is the neighbourhood plan?

Neighbourhood plans, external aim to give communities the power to form a shared vision and shape development in their area.

It cannot promote less development than is set out in Peterborough City Council's local plan, but can provide framework for the way Werrington develops.

The plan is restricted to dealing with matters of land usage and development planning, therefore many other non-planning matters cannot be included.

Werrington's Neighbourhood Council unsuccessfully attempted to produce a plan in 2010 due to legislation change and a lack of funding.

The plan seeks a higher level of vehicle parking requirements for new developments in the area.

Werrington's landscape has been described as pleasing with tree-lined roads and the plan hopes to protect these views.

The neighbourhood plan also has a good provision of sports and recreational facilities - some which are now outdated. The plan seeks improvement of these amenities including footpaths.
