A new course at Keele University will give students hands-on experience and knowledge of the role science plays in sport and exercise.

The initiative is was one of only a handful of sport and exercise degree programmes delivered within a faculty of medicine in the UK, the university said.

Knowledge gained can be used for "a range of applications", including "using physical activity to help prevent and treat chronic diseases".

Students on the BSc Sport and Exercise Science programme will develop practical skills to prepare them for careers in the sport, exercise and health sectors, the university said.

The course is designed to give people the chance to merge scientific knowledge, "hands-on practical experience, and professional practice".

They will work alongside academics in Keele's School of Allied Health Professions and learn in new facilities, including the university's new Exercise and Physiology Laboratories.

Scientific and practical knowledge acquired can be used for applications including assisting professional athletes to maintain peak performance and helping prevent injuries in professional and amateur athletes.

Programme director for sport and exercise science Dr Clare Pheasey, said it was offering "small class sizes designed to support students' learning, practical skills development, and future employability".
