Police were called to Northwold Road on Tuesday evening to reports of a man with a stab injury

A murder investigation has begun after a man, believed to be in his 50s, was fatally stabbed in east London.

The man was injured in Northwold Road in Stoke Newington at about 23:00 BST on Tuesday.

He died at the scene and his family has been informed, the Metropolitan Police says. No arrests have been made.

Det Ch Supt James Conway, who is responsible for policing in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, said he understood the "shock and concern" the man's death would cause, "even more so given the recent and tragic" fatal stabbing of 15-year-old Pharrell Garcia in the borough last week.

'Dreadful'

He added: "I want to reassure people that a team of experienced detectives are already working diligently to identify whoever is responsible for this violent act."

He said while the two "dreadful" deaths had happened in the "same area of Hackney" there was "no suggestion of a link between the two".

He pointed out that a person had been charged with murder after Pharrell's death, "and they are awaiting trial".

Det Ch Supt Conway added, however, that the two stabbings had highlighted "the continued danger presented to the public by people who arm themselves with knives".

He urged anyone with information to contact the force on 101 or to contact Crimestoppers anonymously.
