People using a leisure centre have been told there should be no closures or significant disruption from a £2.4m green energy scheme.

Work had begun on replacing the gas boilers with heat pumps at Biddulph Valley Leisure Centre, Staffordshire Moorlands District Council said.

Nearly 250 solar panels will also be installed on the roof and the overall scheme should be finished by spring.

The project would avoid generating almost 300 tonnes of carbon each year when complete, the council added.

Councillor Nigel Yates said the scheme was a key part of helping the council achieve its carbon reduction targets.

"I'm very much looking forward to seeing the results of this important project in due course," he added.
