Plans have been agreed to transform part of a former newspaper site into a centre for hairdressing and beauty boutiques.

The Express & Star's former base in Queen Street, Wolverhampton, will contain a cafe as well as a barbers and hairdressers with the ground floor remaining as office space.

Plans were submitted last month and approved on Wednesday, council documents showed.

The Express & Star, which has run since the 1880s, moved out of the site six months after it was listed for sale with property firm Knight Frank.

Developers Sculpt design said in its proposal that the site's original use as an industrial building was no longer suitable for its city centre location.

"These proposals will help to revitalise a currently neglected part of the city centre with spaces to support multiple new and expanding businesses."

The building also on Queen Street and Tower Street, had office space, the old press hall and a multi-storey car park with 350 spaces.

Longer-term, City of Wolverhampton Council has earmarked the site as a potential residential development, as part of plans to ensure sufficient housing land into the next decade.
