An elderly man found riding his mobility scooter down a dual carriageway was escorted from the road by police.

Officers said they were called to the A442 in Telford on Saturday evening at approximately 19:00 BST.

The man was helped off the route along a slip road and taken home, West Mercia Police said.

He was “not over familiar with the area” and had thus ended up on a high-speed road, said Shane Goodman, a senior police community support officer.

Mobility scooters can only be used on roads if they are registered, which would mean having a licence plate, tax and insurance, Mr Goodman said.

He added that, even once registered, such scooters can only be used on roads with a speed limit of less than 40mph.

“These sort of offences are very few and far between, and I haven’t before this one ever encountered one on the A442,” Mr Goodman said.

He added that the police had decided not to prosecute the man or seize his scooter.
