Exhibition celebrates 'diverse and powerful women'

Participants in a photography project for women of different nationalities say showing their work gives them a sense of pride and has helped them make new friendships.

Women of the World was run by the Hive community centre in Ipswich and led by professional photographer Gillian Allard.

She worked with seven women, from Ukraine, Afghanistan and Tanzania, to explore creative ways to express their outlook of their new home town in Suffolk.

Ms Allard said: "It was for them to explore identity in a way that's fun and playful, so they could forget about what's going on on the outside and just enjoy their time together."

The themes the group explored include resilience and strength; empowerment and change; cultural and identity; motherhood and family; and hope and joy.

Jackie Ellis, one of the Hive community workers, said: "Through this exhibition we aim to honour the resilience, beauty and strength of women from all walks of life, showcasing their stories through the universal language of photography."

The project was funded by Suffolk County Council.

The images are on display at the Hive on Norwich Road, Ipswich.
