Council set to spend £1m on new leisure facilities

Selston High School wants to build a new four-court sports hall with studio space

A council is expected to agree to spend £1m on new "high quality" leisure facilities in Selston.
Ashfield District Council is planning to invest the money in plans tabled by Selston High School, so residents can use the facilities during the evenings, weekends and school holidays.
Selston High School, which is under the Two Counties Trust, wants to build a new four-court sports hall with studio space in the village.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) said councillors were expected to agree to the investment at a meeting on Tuesday.
The council said the investment would help provide residents of the rural areas of the Ashfield district with "access to high-quality sports and leisure facilities".
'Highest standard'
Arnie Hankin, the authority's ward member for Selston, added: "It is a top priority for us that sports and leisure facilities are available to everyone and we know that it can be a struggle for those in rural areas to get to our leisure centres.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for the people of Selston and we are delighted to be working with Selston High School and Selston Parish Council to deliver this.
"This building will be built to the highest standard of sustainability, helping reduce its carbon impact."
It comes after the council made a commitment in June 2024 to invest in better leisure facilities in the rural areas of the district, particularly Selston, the LDRS said.
A planning application for the new leisure facilities is expected to be submitted "in the next few months."
