A man has been charged with attempted murder following an attack which left two people with serious injuries.

Police were called to a property on Durham Street in Elswick, Newcastle, at about 18:45 GMT on Friday where a man and woman had been assaulted.

Both in their 60s, the woman sustained serious head injuries and is in a critical condition and the man is also in hospital but in a stable condition.

Ross Clancy, 39, of Dunholme Road, appeared at South Shields Magistrates' Court charged with two counts of attempted murder, one count of burglary and one count of theft of a vehicle. He was remanded in custody at will appear at Newcastle Crown Court on 23 December.

Northumbria Police arrested seven other people in connection with the attack who have been released on police bail.

Four men were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, a man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder and two men were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

A cordon remains in place at the scene and the force is appealing for information relating to a report of a stolen red Renault Twingo car.

It is believed to have been parked in the West End of Newcastle between 18:30 and 20:00 on Friday, before it was found in Longbenton on Saturday morning.
