Live explosive found in river by person fishing

The grenade was removed and destroyed in a controlled explosion

A fishing enthusiast got more than they bargained for when they pulled a live explosive out of a river.

A rifle grenade was reeled to the surface of the River Great Ouse, on Monday afternoon, by a person fishing with a magnet in London Road, St Ives.

Cambridgeshire Police said the device was believed to be about 100 years old.

Officers sent photos of the grenade to bomb disposal experts on the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, "who came out and moved the device to RAF Wyton where a controlled explosion was carried out", they wrote on Facebook.
