A family carnival has been cancelled due to "extreme heat".

Telford & Wrekin Council said it understood the decision to call off the We Are Telford Carnival, due to take place on Sunday, would be "disappointing".

But it said its "top priority is the safety of the people taking part and our visitors".

It said it aimed to reschedule the carnival as part of its Balloon Fiesta event in August.

"Many of the groups participating in the parade are in costume and carrying out performances such as gymnastics and dancing, increasing the risks associated with the heat," the local authority said.

"Thanks for your understanding as we ensure safety for all."

Temperatures in Telford on Sunday are expected to reach 29C, according to BBC Weather.
