Two pedestrians have been left with "potentially life-changing injuries" after a car hit a shop, said police.

Suffolk Police was called to Tallou Place in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, on Saturday evening to reports of a BMW colliding with a shop front.

Three people were airlifted to hospital, with the third described as being in a serious but stable condition.

The police have appealed for witnesses and dash cam footage to help them work out what happened.

It said crews helped to free casualties from the vehicle.

The force advised drivers to avoid the area as it would remain closed for some time.

The driver sustained minor injuries and has been released from hospital.

A cordon placed around the scene at the Moreton Hall Fish & Kebab shop has now been lifted.

A police spokesperson said the force was "appealing for any witnesses to the collision and asking any motorists driving in the area at the time of the incident with a dash cam fitted in their vehicle, to review the footage for any material that may be of assistance".

'Shocked onlookers'

The BBC's Rachael McMenemy, reporting from the scene, said: "Shocked onlookers crowded around the scene as more and more emergency services arrived.

"The air was filled with the roar of two air ambulances landing on neighbouring pitches, joining the sound of sirens as more police and ambulance vehicles raced into the car park outside the shop."

Describing the area, she added: "There are two shops that look out towards a green field, usually used for football games.

"It’s in an area that’s a hub for the Moreton Hall estate. There’s a church next door, and the Post Office and community centre to the side.

"It’s usually a busy area with people using a path next to the shops to reach the estate’s local Tesco and GP practice."
