The Post Office has confirmed it will retain a branch in the centre of Inverness.

Fears had been raised locals would be left without services after the company announced it planned to close the city's main branch on Queensgate.

However, postal and cash services will be offered in the nearby Co-op supermarket on Church Street, about 80m (262ft) away.

The relocation is part of wider plans by the Post Office to change to a fully franchised network, which it said will give it a long-term sustainable future.

Inverness and Nairn MSP Fergus Ewing said it was a good outcome to a worrying situation.

The new branch is due to open following a refurbishment of the Co-op store in October.

The Post Office confirmed the relocation to the Inverness Courier, external earlier this week.

The arrangement expands on the existing partnership between the Post Office and the supermarket, with more than 200 branches operating from Co-op stores across the UK.

Over 99% of the Post Office network is already operated on a franchise basis.
