A man has been arrested after a town was hit by a string of arson attacks.

Emergency services were called to the three fires across Hucknall in Nottinghamshire between 22:00 GMT on Monday and 00:20 on Tuesday.

Nottinghamshire Police said five vehicles, a wheelie bin and a fence had been set alight in attacks in Griffiths Way, Pagett Close, Story Gardens and Whyburn Lane.

On Tuesday, the force said it had arrested a 31-year-old on suspicion of arson.

Insp Chris Boylin, neighbourhood policing inspector for Ashfield, said: "Police patrols were increased in the area overnight in response, and these will continue today.

"Officers will be in the neighbourhood carrying out investigations with the fire service."

A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said deliberate fires could potentially impact on its response to a serious incident.

"Deliberate fires are not only dangerous to people and property but to our wildlife too, as they can often easily spread," the fire service added.
