Work has been approved to a Grade II listed village hall on one of the busiest roads into Nottingham.

One of Clifton’s oldest buildings, Clifton Village Hall, was built in 1871 as a schoolhouse, and has been used as a community centre since the 1950s, when the Clifton Estate was built.

Nottingham City Council has now approved plans for an extension and other works, which the Village Hall Trust says will allow it to remain in use “for the next 50 years”.

Patricia Rice, chairwoman of the Clifton Village Residents' Association, told the BBC: “It’s a valuable asset for the Clifton area.”

She added: “It’s in use every day for yoga, art classes, garden groups, pilates, mum and baby groups, wedding receptions - you name it, it goes on in there.

“The extra room will be invaluable. It will enhance the entrance, which is looking a bit down on its heel at the moment, and there will be extra space in the toilets and kitchen.”

The building, in Village Road, just off the A453 Remembrance Way, will get a new modern entrance lobby, which will lead to a new multi-purpose room.

These two rooms can form one larger space or be partitioned as required.

Extensions will provide a contemporary entrance to the older building

A kitchen extension is also approved, while some more modern parts of the site - a store building and part of the toilet block - will be demolished.

In its application, the trust said: “This proposal has been a long time in coming, but the time has come for this community facility to get the entranceway and enhanced community spaces it needs to continue to support the activities of the Clifton community for the next 50 years.

“Care has been taken to remove as little of the existing building as possible, and to provide light and modern additions that leave the original hall more clearly expressed than before.”
