A new borough flag will be flown for the first time this weekend, following a competition to design it which was won by a local schoolgirl.

Amelia's winning entry in the Telford flag competition will be hoisted into position at Southwater Square at 13:30 GMT on Saturday as part of the borough's inaugural Telford Day celebrations.

The nine-year-old's design features the Ironbridge, along with a cog in reference to industrial heritage, and the colour green to represent its parks and open spaces

"We've had such a fantastic response to the new Telford flag, with so many positive comments and many people asking how they get their hands on a copy," said council leader Lee Carter.

"Whether you want to get it printed on a T-shirt, add it to a company website or get a sticker for your car, it would be great to see as many people as possible adopt the flag and to be as proud of it as we are."

He added: "Amelia should be really proud of what she has achieved in creating a flag to represent our borough that we hope creates civic pride for many years to come."

The new Telford Day is a day for residents and visitors to come together to celebrate, and mark the date the town was formed on 29 November 1968.

Amelia thanked all those who had voted for her design, and congratulated the other entrants in the competition.

"I'm really happy I've won the flag competition, I think we all did really well," she said.

"I am excited to see my flag flying."

Her mum Jayne added: "We are incredibly proud of Amelia for winning the flag competition. Her design was creative and thoughtful and reflected Telford so well."

Telford Day will also see a Made in Telford Christmas Makers Market, as well as a variety of other activities, culminating in a lantern parade at 17:30 and live music from 19:00.
