A burglar has been charged with escaping from custody after he allegedly fled the dock as he was due to be sentenced.

The man is accused of escaping from Canterbury Crown Court in Kent during a hearing on 4 April.

He was found by police in Herne Bay nearly a week later.

He was subsequently charged with escaping from lawful custody and possession of cannabis.

Two other men have also been charged with assisting the man and will appear at Folkestone Magistrates' Court.

One allegedly bought the man a mobile phone sim card, and arranged transport, food and housing for him, while the other allegedly transported and housed him.

The pair are on bail and due to appear at Folkestone Magistrates' Court in April.
