The opening of Knaresborough's new £17.6m leisure centre has suffered a further delay due to ongoing building works.

North Yorkshire Council had hoped to open the Leisure and Wellness Centre on King James Road in late summer, before it was pushed back to November.

The launch has now been delayed to December due to "complex mechanical and electrical works".

The council confirmed the delay would not affect the project's overall budget.

Complex mechanical and electrical works are taking longer than anticipated

North Yorkshire Council took over the project from Harrogate Borough Council earlier this year, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

The council’s corporate director for community development, Nic Harne, said: “We have been informed by the contractor that due to complex mechanical and electrical works at Knaresborough Leisure and Wellness Centre taking longer than anticipated there will, unfortunately, be a slight delay to its reopening.

“We now anticipate that the newly refurbished centre will be open to the public in early December."

The facility, which the council describes as a “complete wellness destination” with 25m pool, gym and children's play area, will be powered by air source heat pumps and solar panels.
