High street revamp aims to boost events
- Published
The revamp of a town centre high street has been completed in a bid to allow more events to take place in the area.
The redevelopment of Norton High Street in Stockton, Teesside, has been designed to improve traffic flow and create more pedestrian areas.
It is hoped the changes will allow more outdoor leisure activities, such as pop-up markets, to take place.
Nigel Cooke, from Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, said the infrastructure improvements were needed to "ensure everyone continues to have the best experience".
"This work is so important for futureproofing Norton and ensuring it is fit for purpose for future generations," he said.
"It's fantastic to see the finished result."
As part of the work a 20mph speed limited has been introduced and a fountain has been installed in the duck pond.
A large pedestrian space has been created at Harland Place where events can be held, while new benches and bins have been installed along High Street.
Road changes include the introduction of a one-way system and the creation of six extra parking spaces. The car park in front of Boots has also been resurfaced.
The work has been carried out as part of plans to develop six town centres across the borough.
