Torbay Council said the work should be completed before Remembrance Day

Repair and cleaning work has started on a Devon seaside war memorial ahead of Remembrance Day.

Torbay Council said work was being done at the memorial in Torquay's Princess Gardens following a donation made by the Mellors Group, which has operated the English Riviera Wheel during the summer.

Boarding and scaffolding has been erected around the memorial as work to clean the stone, repointing and other repairs is carried out, the council said.

The authority added the aim was to have the memorial ready in time for Remembrance Day on 10 November.

Councillor Jackie Thomas, cabinet member for tourism, culture and events and corporate services, said the work would ensure the memorial was carefully restored and preserved.

"All year round the War Memorial in Princess Gardens serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifices made by our servicemen and women," she said.
