A council has approved Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPO) to buy land to complete a ring road around Lincoln.

More than 190 hectares (470 acres) will be acquired by Lincolnshire County Council to build the North Hykeham Relief Road.

It will link the city's Eastern Bypass with the the A46 Pennells Roundabout.

The estimated cost to to finish the final leg is between £180m and £208m and it is planned to be open by 2028.

The majority of the land to be purchased is in the freehold ownership of about 20 individuals or companies, with some of the land occupied by agricultural tenants.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the council also agreed to introduce Side Road Orders (SRO) which will permit work on existing highways and private access roads necessary for the development.

During a meeting of the council's executive, councillor Richard Davies praised the project, highlighting how it would alleviate challenges surrounding Lincolnshire’s transport network.

“I’m very pleased to see it coming forward after the success of delivering the Lincoln Eastern Bypass, the next link in the chain," he said.

Funding for the road consists of just over £110m from the Department for Transport, just under £74m from the county council and £10 million from developer contributions.
