Criminal damage charge after car crash at Chequers

A man has been charged after a car crashed into the gates of Chequers, the prime minister’s country residence.

Matthew Wootten, 44, of Grove Lane, Great Kimble, in Buckinghamshire, has been charged with aggravated criminal damage and dangerous driving, said Thames Valley Police.

It comes after a white Volkswagen Scirocco hit the barriers at the entrance on Missenden Road shortly after midday on 25 June.

Mr Wootten has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on Saturday.

The Chequers estate, near the village of Ellesborough, has been the country home of the serving British prime minister since 1921.
