Construction has been completed on an upgrade of a bus station in an East Sussex town centre.

The bus station off Bell Lane in Uckfield now has modern bus shelters with planted roofs and wireless charging points, enhanced real time information, improved street lighting and a new cycle shelter, East Sussex County Council said.

Councillor Claire Dowling, the local authority's lead member for transport and environment, said she was "delighted" at the project's completion.

“I’d like to thank the public for their patience while work was carried out and hope they can now enjoy the benefits,” she said.

The work was carried out by Balfour Beatty Living Places, and completed in partnership with Wealden District Council and Uckfield Town Council.

More than £800,000 of investment was raised through development contributions, county council funding and money from the East Sussex Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP).

The money also funded a new loading bay, a new footway and crossing points along the south side of Bell Walk, plus benches and planters.

Ms Dowling said she hoped it would encourage more people to use public transport.

"As well as improving the look of the area, the project has resulted in better facilities for passengers and the enhanced real time information will help people better plan their journeys," she said.
