Student's gym death due to traumatic head injury

A medical student who died at a gym suffered a traumatic head injury, a coroner said.

Mohammed Farraj, 21, was declared dead at the scene at the University of East Anglia's Sportspark in Norwich on Wednesday, 16 October.

Opening and adjourning an inquest into his death, Norfolk area coroner Samantha Goward gave a provisional cause of death as the head injury, sustained while he was in the gym.

The inquest in Norwich heard emergency services were called, but the student was declared dead by the medical team.

The Health and Safety Executive confirmed its criminal investigation into the incident was continuing.

On Monday, Norfolk Police said its investigation had "concluded [and] that there was no third-party involvement".

Several tributes have been posted to the student, who was born in Stoke-on-Trent, including one from the university's men's football team.

"Mohammed was someone who loved to stay fit and active, he was also an aspiring doctor," it said.

"Mohammed was someone who represented all the universities' core values .. he was caring and a joy to be around."

The inquest has been adjourned until 21 February and reports from the student's father, GP and the police have been requested by the coroner.

The gym, which was closed in the aftermath of Mr Farraj's death, has reopened.
