A consultation on plans to increase fees at council-run car parks in a Leicestershire town has been launched.

Charnwood Borough Council wants to charge more for parking at its five sites in Loughborough.

It says the current fees have been unchanged for 12 years and costs have "risen significantly" during that time.

The proposed changes include increasing an hour's parking from 60p to £1 and from £6 to £7 at some locations.

The rates would apply at the Beehive Lane, Southfield Road, Granby Street and Southfield Offices car parks Monday to Sunday, including bank holidays.

A charge of £10 for between six and 24 hours of parking at the Granby Street car park is also proposed.

The authority also wants to increase charges at the Browns Lane car park for both users and non-users of Loughborough Leisure Centre.

Liz Blackshaw, the council's lead member for parking, said: "We welcome people's views and they will be considered before any final decision has been taken."

The consultation will run until 20 October.
