A man has been charged following an alleged sexual assault on a 17-year-old girl in a park.

Durham Police were called to South Park in Darlington at about 16:45 GMT on Saturday.

A 42-year-old man from Darlington was charged with attempted rape, sexual assault and false imprisonment, police said.

He is due to appear at Teesside Crown Court next month.

The man appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court on Monday and was remanded into custody.

He is due to appear again for a plea and trial preparation hearing on 4 December.
