A popular motor rally event is facing opposition amid concerns it could harm designated scenic parts of Herefordshire.

The Hills Ford Stages, centred in Ledbury, are set to be held in the county on 13 and 14 September.

However, both the Wye Valley and Malvern Hills National Landscape teams were concerned the rally "could harm the special qualities" of nationally designated landscapes in the area.

The groups have lodged their opposition with Herefordshire Council as part of a consultation, before the authority decides on proposed road closures in the county during the event.

Concerns include impacts on the "tranquillity and rural character of the landscapes" and "potential damage to sensitive ecological sites" as well as access for visitors, due to public footpath and road closures, said planning officer Catherine Laidlaw.

Councillor Barry Durkin, cabinet member for roads added: "The planned event has led to a number of issues which will need to be reviewed and addressed as part of any application process.

"Additional supporting information and evidence has been requested, once received, officers will review and make the final decision," Durkin said.

The event is organised by Cheltenham Motor Club, which claims to be one of the UK's oldest motor clubs, having been founded in 1906.

Anouska Lysandrou, rally events secretary, said parishes involved in the event were supportive, adding online, "hundreds of people have said they are for it, compared to three or four people against us making so much noise."
