Murder detectives identify victim

A man who died following a suspected assault has been named by detectives.

John Smyth, 63, was found seriously injured at a house on Holly Avenue in Wallsend, North Tyneside, just before 05:00 BST on Sunday.

He died a short time later, Northumbria Police said.

Two men aged 41 and 34 were arrested on suspicion of murder the same day, but the 34-year-old has now been released and told he will face no further action. The older man remains in custody.

Mr Smyth, born in Glasgow, was from the Derby area and had recently moved to North Tyneside, the police said.

Det Ch Insp Matt Steel said the force's thoughts were with the victim's family and loved ones.

He asked for anyone with information relating to Mr Smyth's death to come forward.
