Snow causes transport delays and closes roads

Snow closed the runway at Bristol Airport for the second time in recent days.

Flights were suspended until about 08:00 GMT after snow fell overnight in North Somerset.

A yellow Met Office warning for snow and ice are in place for Somerset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

Elsewhere in Somerset, the A39 has been closed in both directions in Wells on Bristol Hill due to snow and the A37 is closed in both directions between Ston Easton and Shepton Mallet.

The airport was also closed two days ago, when a number of flights were delayed including to Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Belfast.

Meanwhile, Bristol City Council has announced it is extending its Severe Weather Emergency Protocol for rough sleepers until Thursday 9 January.

The protocol means extra support and accommodation is available during the cold weather.

On X, First Bus West of England said services 171 and 173 between Wells and Bath, and services 376 and 376a between Bristol, Yeovil and Wells would not be running because of the snow.

In Somerset, Bishop Henderson school in Coleford, Whitstone School in Shepton Mallet and Chewton Mendip Church of England primary school are also closed., external

Wiltshire Police said on Facebook that it was dealing with five different accidents around Chippenham this morning, all caused by the snow.

"Please slow down and allow extra time for your journey, ensure your vehicle windows are clear and snow is removed from the roof of your vehicle," the police said.

In Frome, the town's minor injuries unit was also closed until 10:00 GMT because of the weather.
