Artist's new mural sinks teeth into city centre

Artist Phlegm has created a street art mural on Eldon Street in Sheffield

A giant cat mural has been painted by a street artist in Sheffield city centre.

The black-and-white image of a malevolent moggy trying to eat people appeared on Eldon Street.

It is the latest creation from local artist Phlegm, joining his previous macabre murals which adorn buildings in the city.

Andy Carter, who runs the Street Art Sheffield website, called it "a typical Phlegm piece of work - very impressive".

The artist was caught in the act on Thursday

Mr Carter said he had not seen any of Phlegm's artwork crop up in Sheffield since last summer, but "he's a busy person, creating lots of work all around the world".

"Perhaps we don't see as much of his work in Sheffield as we once did, but when we do, they're usually good."

He believed street art was increasing in popularity and now received the same level of respect as other types of art.

"Here in Sheffield, people are really appreciating it now that it's being commissioned to brighten up areas," he said.

"People want to see it everywhere now, it seems."
