A 22-year-old has been given a six-year jail sentence after stabbing a man he had chased down in Canterbury.

Rashaan White, of Wincheap, was arrested following the serious assault in Station Road East on 29 September last year.

He admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent before his sentencing at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday.

Another man who took part in the assault, Joseph Agbata, 22, of Eltham, south-east London, was given a two-year suspended sentence for unlawful wounding.

The assault took place shortly after 01:00 BST, when witnesses saw White and Agbata chasing a man along the road outside Canterbury East railway station.

In an attempt to get away, the victim got into a van of someone waiting nearby, causing the vehicle's owner to jump out and get into another van, Kent Police said.

White then smashed the windows of the van in which the victim was hiding, causing him to get out and run away.

The pair then caught up with the victim and repeatedly punched him.

The force said that when the man fell to the ground, White and Agbata kicked and stamped on him, with White twice stabbing the victim with a knife.

The victim was taken to a London hospital and was later discharged.

Kent Police said it tracked down White using footage from witnesses and CCTV, with clothing matching what he was seen in during the attack found in the room he was staying in.

Agbata was later stopped and arrested after being seen by an officer in Canterbury.

Det Con Connie Baker, investigating officer for East Kent CID, said: "This was an extremely violent assault and it is only through sheer good fortune that the victim did not suffer far more serious injuries."
