Cancellations and delays impacted services after a problem at a depot

Rail lines have reopened after a problem at a depot disrupted train services to and from Brighton.

Southern rail said there may still be cancellations or delays, external while the service recovered, and disruption was expected to continue until 20:00 BST.

Earlier, Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), which runs Southern, along with Thameslink and Gatwick Express services, which were all affected, warned of "significant disruption" after power to some lines had to be turned off.

GTR said the problem occurred in a depot between Brighton and Preston Park, which meant trains were unable to run between the stations.

Norma Pynn said the disruption was "frustrating"

At Brighton railway station, passenger Zac Dodd said the situation was "frustrating" because he was having to find another way to get to work at Gatwick.

Norma Pynn, who was travelling to Poole in Dorset, said she would miss her connection because her train was delayed and described the disruption as "extremely" frustrating.

A GTR spokesperson said: "We are very sorry for the disruption to customers’ journeys this morning, engineers are on site and working to restore power."
