There has been a call for a public screen to be put up in Cambridge on Sunday for the Euro 2024 final when England take on Spain.

Tim Bick, leader of the Liberal Democrat opposition on Cambridge City Council, has asked Sam Carling, the executive councillor of open services and city services, if putting up a screen would be possible.

Mr Carling - who is also the newly elected Labour MP for North West Cambridgeshire - agreed that it could be a good opportunity to bring the city together.

But Mr Bick said the plan had not yet been confirmed and a venue had not been selected.

Mr Bick wrote to Mr Carling on Thursday following England’s victory in the semi-final and said: "I would like to request that the council arranges a public screen for viewing the final of the Euros on Sunday, when the national team faces Spain."

Mr Carling replied: "This is an ideal opportunity to bring the city together behind the success of our national team.

"It seems something that Cambridge could now do at this final stage. The city council would like to bring the city together.

"Sometimes the opportunities to do that don’t come off council reports and policy resolutions, and it’s just important to respond to people’s own appetite to share hopes and excitement with each other.

“This could be a great event for an inclusive experience for families and children."
