Three rescued seal pups have been released back into the wild in Guernsey.

The GSPCA said the grey seals - named Cleopatra, Hector and Peej - nearly tripled their body weight while they were in care.

Hector was the first to be rescued in December 2022, followed by Cleopatra in January, and Peej in April 2023.

The animal charity said it had now released a total of 32 pups back into the wild over the past decade.

'Lovely to see'

Geoff George, the GSPCA's head of marine mammals, said the release at Portlet was a success.

"It was lovely to see them swim free where they belong, although Cleo and Peej needed some assistance as they didn’t seem to want to come out of their transport carriers," he said.

“These were the last three grey seal pups.

"For the first time in a long time we have no seals in our care.”

The organisation reminded people not to approach a seal pup as it may scare their mother away.

It says to call the GSPCA to ensure the animal is safe.
