A non-league football player has been sacked from his club after an “incident" in a bar with a supporter.

AFC Rushden & Diamonds in Northamptonshire, which is in the Northern Premier League, said the player “will not feature for the club” in future.

It said the incident took place after Saturday’s 4-0 defeat to Lye Town.

In a statement the club said it took a “zero-tolerance stance on any and all violence”.

“Whilst football is a game that evokes extremes of emotions and divides opinions, AFC Rushden & Diamonds are committed to ensuring that all players, supporters and visitors treat one another with respect and are able to attend matches free from the threat of abuse of a physical or verbal nature,” the club added.
