Lifeguards will be present at 23 beaches over the break, the RNLI says

RNLI lifeguards in the South West have returned to some beaches for the school half-term holiday.

It said lifeguards would patrol 23 beaches across Devon, Cornwall and Jersey for the half-term period from Saturday, 25 October until Sunday, 2 November.

Henry Saddler-Irvine, RNLI regional lifeguard lead for the South West, said "conditions can be challenging at this time of year" with autumn storms "bringing large swells and an increased risk to people on the coast".

The RNLI said lifeguards would be present on 23 beaches between 10:00 and 17:00 BST/GMT.

Mr Saddler-Irvine said: "We will also see spring tides towards the beginning of the half-term week, which means faster moving currents and the potential for tidal cut offs.

"If you do find yourself in trouble in the water, remember the RNLI's advice to not panic and float to live - lie flat on your back with your arms outstretched, ears submerged and allow your body to adapt to the water before calling for help."

The charity said after 2 November, there would be no lifeguard cover on any beach until spring 2026.

Beach patrols will take place:

  • In Devon: Bantham, Croyde, Woolacombe

  • In Cornwall: Tregonhawke, Praa Sands, Crantock, Fistral, Towan, Watergate Bay, Mawgan Porth, Porthtowan, Chapel Porth, Perranporth, Gwithian North, Hayle Towans, Porthmeor, Sennen, Constantine, Harlyn, Polzeath, Widemouth, Summerleaze

  • In Jersey: Le Braye (St Ouen)
